Sad news – Melon Cauli to close, Aldi to try again

I have used the brilliantly named Melon Cauli for years now. Especially on a Keto diet the quality of the fruit and veg is far better than anything you may get at Aldi, Asda etc.

So it is personally very sad that Warwick is closing it at Xmas. Obviously business was not good enough and unlike the butchers I suspect quality was not good enough over price at the blasted super markets.

People want cheap food and that means lower quality esp a lot of is frozen, stored then sold at a later date. So I do mourn the closure of it and will I guess have to go back to super markets with flying their food all over the world so consumers have a ‘choice’.

Edit – Also just read the Gt Barr Observer and see Aldi trying again with another application. The council (Birmingham) would be crazy to allow this. I had to drive yesterday afternoon past the Island, it was utter chaos and no amount of changing the planning application will resolve this.

It is sad news because if this happens it is over and above common sense and I don’t care if people want it, how many actually have to live close to the area and don’t see the chaos there.

It is very lazy to pretend it is needed as well, given the other Aldi’s are barely 5-10 minutes drive away.

  1. Hi Ian, like yourself and probably other members of your family, my family have shopped at Melon Cauli since it opened. It is very sad news that it’s going to close.
I couldn’t agree more with you with regard to a second attempt to site an Aldi store just down from the Old Horns island on the Birmingham/North Warwickshire side of the Queslett Road. I was on that section of the Queslett Road yesterday afternoon (before the rush hour home had even begun) and it was absolute chaos!
It would be a disastrous decision to give the green light to this application and daily put even more delivery vehicles, staff members cars and hundreds more vehicles owned by shoppers visiting a new store on to an already too busy part of our local road system.

    • yet the consultation was largely in favour and many from our estate were saying they wanted it. I suspect many don’t live close by or care to go down there on a Sunday Morning etc.

I suspect it will be again thrown out but these companies try and try again until they are successful but nothing can resolve the traffic issue.

(unless Asda closes and just been there, so empty compared to how it used to be)

  2. I’m a resident of Moreton Avenue and I was so sad to hear of Melon Cauli closing. We have lost that, plus the pharmacy and doctors has relocated, the post office moving into the newsagents. The biggest shame of all is the eyesore that is the old petrol station at the end of my road. For years its been abandoned and it seems now Walsall Council ( dont matter whether its Tory or Labour) has given up and it seems nothing will change in the foreseeable future.
